Directions - Character Profiles and Casting

 Character Profiles and Casting

For each character, I wrote a breakdown in order to get a sense of each character and find cast, who I felt were suited for each role. I used Mandy.com when looking for the hypothetical cast. When using Mandy.com, I filtered the ages and genders to find actors suited to each character.

Lady Bird/Christine McPherson:

Lady Bird is a sassy, rebellious 17-year-old, who is struggling to find her place in the world and is considered a bit of an outcast. Lady Bird's relationship with her family, particularly her mother, is strained. She has a good sense of humour and is intelligent, but doesn't always think before she speaks, which often lands her in some sort of trouble. She is a student at a private catholic school, Immaculate Heart of Mary, which she was sent to as a result of her brother being witness to a stabbing, rather than because of her family's beliefs, all of whom have little to no belief with regards to religion. Lady Bird appears more alternative to her peers and tries to sneak in bits of herself into her appearance whenever she can.

I felt as though this woman was well suited to play the character of Lady Bird. She appears as though she could play someone who is 17-years-old. She seems as though she is innocent on the outside, but not so much upon interaction with her, which I believe the character of Lady Bird to be. I felt as though her look (e.g. hairstyle, clothing, make-up etc.) could be adapted to suit the character of Lady Bird.

Casey:

Casey is a "heavy-set" (Gerwig, 2017: 70), incredibly religious, PTA/soccer mom type. She has a "wedge haircut" (Gerwig, 2017:70) and is a sassy, judgemental character. She is passionate and strong in her beliefs. She is in her mid-to-late forties/early fifties. I could imagine this lady to have a wedge haircut, have a similar personality to Casey, and be able to portray Casey effectively.

Sister Sarah-Joan:

Sister Sarah-Joan is a nun, who works at Immaculate Heart of Mary. She is tough towards Lady Bird, but has a soft spot towards her, although she doesn't like to show it. She has a good sense of humour that connects her and Lady Bird. I felt as this actor was suited to play Sister Sarah-Joan as I could imagine her as a nun. She looks as though she has a good sense of humour and rebellious side to her, similar to Sister Sarah-Joan.

Jenna:

Jenna is considered the popular girl, who everyone wants to be friends with. She's religious and aspires to be a mother when she is older. She doesn't like liars and isn't that keen on Lady Bird, mainly because she is seen as different to others. Jenna is 17-years-old. This actor looked as though she could fit the role of a popular school girl.

Marion McPherson:

Marion a mental health nurse in her early 50s. She is the mother to Lady Bird and Miguel and the wife to Larry. She appears to be the head of her household. Marion and her husband, Larry are under increasing financial pressure. She has a strained relationship with Lady Bird, whom she loves very much but doesn't always know how to show it. Marion often appears cold and critical towards her daughter for example, when she says "I highly doubt that you will be able to get a job good enough to do that" (Gerwig, 2017:75). The actor that I went with for the character of Marion, had the appearance of someone who could potentially be a nurse and mother. I felt as though she could portray someone who is stressed, under pressure and has a strained relationship with their daughter.

Larry McPherson:

Larry McPherson is an unemployed male in his early-to-mid 50s. He's the father of Lady Bird and Miguel and the husband of Marion. He often appears quite shy and timid. He holds a soft spot for Lady Bird and often displays his care and love for her. Larry is recently unemployed and is depressed. The actor I chose looked like a he could be a loving father, who has a slightly geeky side to him.
